Moving Forward, Together

farawayreformer.jpg

Socially distant, but close in my heart.

I've been spending the last few weeks talking with the teachers I've trained that have already opened their Pilates studios, talking to experts in science and health professions, and looking closely at the guidelines from our governor to prepare for our opening, hopefully mid-June.  Here's what you need to know:

When will you open?
Multnomah County needs to apply to reopen, and JSP will fall under Phase I of the reopening plan, so it looks like June 12th will be the earliest we will be allowed to open again.

Will you still offer virtual classes?
Yes!  The feedback has been amazing from the virtual classes, so if you do not feel safe to return, please feel free to stay virtually connected to us until you are ready to return.

How can we keep the studio safe, together?
Reduced Numbers and More Space

Classes will be reduced to two people and one instructor (only the two Reformer/Cadillac combos will be used, and they have been moved so they are more than 12 feet from head to head).
Waivers
Waivers that you and your household are symptom free need to be signed and sent via email before your first in-person class.  Waivers can be downloaded here.
Personalized Bundle
If you want to purchase your own handles and straps before you visit, Peak Pilates is offering them at a reduced rate here.  When you enter the studio, you will have a sanitized box for your personal items.
Ventilation
Windows and/or doors will be left open for extra air flow.  Please wait outside before entering the studio at your lesson time.
Hand Washing and Cleaning Protocols
Staff will wash hands before each session, and clients will be expected to wash their hands before beginning a session.  Extra time will be left for cleaning, using a 75% alcohol and water mixture as recommended by the CDC for killing viruses.  Antimicrobial medical film will be used over handles, bars, and poles, and replaced at the beginning of each session.
Masks and Gloves
Staff will wear masks and gloves during your session.  We will also provide masks you can use that will be washed between visits.
Cancellation Policy Relaxed
If you or anyone in your household have a fever or cold symptoms, please stay home.  You will not be charged for your missed session.

Introducing Jennifer Cree!

jennifer.jpg

Jennifer was first introduced to Pilates at a local gym while in dental hygiene school. She instantly fell in love. While working dental hygiene, a rewarding but physically repetitive job, Jennifer found herself turning to Pilates to offset and balance the stress on her body and support her goals as an endurance athlete. She decided to attend the Advanced Teacher Training Program in Boulder, Colorado under the mentorship of Carey MacNaughton and Teresa Lee to become a certified Pilates instructor. Jennifer is especially passionate about helping others utilize Pilates to improve their movement patterns during sports, work-related, and repetitive-stress pain. Pilates is Jennifer’s inspiration in life and her way to relieve stress, have fun, and share her passion for movement and health with her community.

Have I told you about the painting yet?

One of the things I love about the new space for JSP is the great light.  The last studio got a little cave-ish and dark.  So I wanted to bring in a painting that would help create a little welcome area.  My client, Jolie Guillebeau, said she had something that would work, color-wise and size-wise.

"What's the title?"  I asked.

"String of pearls."

I knew right then and there I had to have the painting.  Lay your spine down like a string of pearls is one of the most popular Pilates cues for spinal articulation.  I wish my spine looked this pretty.

And do you know the best part of this story?  Jolie didn't know the cue.  She was newer to Pilates and we hadn't talked about it yet.

So there you have it.  I hope to give this painting a good home.  Stop by and see it sometime and lay your spine down, pearl by pearl.

Meet our Newest Instructor, Kathi Martuza!

Kathiheadshot.jpeg

Kathi Martuza began her Pilates practice at the age of 14, as a young aspiring ballerina. She then went on to have a successful 15-year long career as a professional ballet dancer with the San Francisco Ballet and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Kathi attributes her ability to achieve and maintain a successful career to her continued Pilates practice. Kathi found Pilates to enhance her body awareness, strength, coordination, flexibility and balance, thus helping her both prevent and recover from injuries.

Kathi’s early experience with Pilates led her on a life long path of exploring the connection between the mind, body and movement and the capacity for movement to promote wellness and healing for the mind, body and soul. She began her teacher training at reFORM in 2008, and continued to apprentice with Pilates teacher/trainer Patricia Collins in 2013. In 2014 she began working towards her PEAK Pilates certification.

In addition to teaching Pilates, Kathi teaches ballet at Da Vinci Middle School, does Health Coaching for girls and women out of her home, and conducts True Body Project workshops around town. When not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 and half year old son, playing in the dirt (gardening), jogging through Laurelhurst Park, and sleeping in.
